An Introduction To Anxiety

We’ve all felt it. That pounding in our chest, the sweat that begins collecting on our hands, a slight dizziness or nausea, and the thoughts in our head that make the difficult seem impossible.

According to a variety of sources, anxiety is rising in adults at a rapid rate. These statistics don’t even take into account the number of people who go undiagnosed or those who experience feelings of anxiousness from time to time rather than constantly living with it. Anxiety is a feeling each one of us has had no matter where on the scale of intensity we’ve had it, and it’s a feeling that will always exist.

Life is scary and really difficult at times. We get thrown many obstacles that, quite frankly, aren’t a walk in the park. Having to give a presentation in a meeting, participate in conversations while at social events, working on a project that is pushing you further than you anticipate, etc., are just a few examples of the many times we might feel anxious. Wouldn’t life be SO much better if we just said no whenever we felt uncomfortable? Forget about that project you were supposed to get done. Now you can spend your time doing whatever you want and not worry about the many things that might go wrong.

The power of “no” is being emphasized a lot in our day, which is great! You shouldn’t always have to say yes, especially when certain uncomfortable situations arise, but that’s another story. In regards to feelings of anxiousness, when we choose no, we close ourselves off from opportunities of growth, which quite frankly can end up negatively impacting our lives and the lives of those around us.

Before we dive deeper into this topic in the coming weeks, what are your beginning thoughts? How have you or others you know been affected by feelings of anxiousness? Is anxiety something we should even be concerning ourselves with?
